Prevent tooth loss and restore gum health with periodontal maintenance

“Peri” and “odont” are derived from the Greek words for “around” and “tooth.” So, when at Acton Dental Associates, we refer to “periodontal maintenance,” we are talking about methods to keep our patients’ gums healthy. Gummy tissue protects the teeth and provides support and structure. The health and function of the gums can be eroded, though, by destructive gum disease. In fact, the CDC reports that almost half of Americans aged 30 and older develop gum disease, a leading cause of tooth loss.

As a progressive condition, however, there are many opportunities for our team to halt the disease in its tracks. In its earliest stages, the effects of gum disease can even be reversed. Moreover, inflammation that characterizes early-stage disease may be prevented in the first place with a combination of home care and professional services at our practice.

Gingivitis represents the mildest type of gum or periodontal disease. This inflammation may present as tender, red, and swollen gums; however, some patients may experience no symptoms.

Our dentists and hygienists, can reverse this potentially destructive condition and prevent the disease from progressing to its more advanced, severe stages with:

  • An advanced alternative to the “standard” professional cleaning: dental scaling and root planing to remove bacteria from the teeth, under the gums, and root surfaces
  • Guidance on correct brushing and flossing techniques and professional oral care products
  • As needed, repairs to ill-fitting crowns and other dental restorations.
  • A long-term schedule of professional cleanings and checkups at 3-month intervals

Untreated, gingivitis can progress to a more severe stage of gum infection: periodontitis. Less advanced cases may be treated without surgery to prevent damage to the soft tissues that attach the gums to the teeth and the supportive bone and teeth.

The American Academy of Periodontology has set forth guidelines that dictate periodontal health should be achieved in the most cost-effective and non-invasive way possible. But tissues don’t always respond to nonsurgical procedures and proper home care. Dental surgery may be suggested to resolve more advanced cases of periodontitis. The idea is to encourage the regrowth of the tissues, restoring healthy reattachment of the gums and teeth.
